Denim is one of the most versatile items in your closet, and you can wear it any day of the week. Most people pair denim with t-shirts or button-down shirts, but street style stars have created some amazing outfits by adding denim to their ensembles. These looks are great inspiration if you’re looking to add denim to your daily wardrobe.
The right denim
Denim has been a wardrobe staple for decades, but the street style stars are redefining denim in the most unexpected ways. Creating interesting looks with your denim just requires that you pay attention to what you wear it with, and that you’re willing to break the rules a little bit and go against what most people associate as stylish. Try layering jeans under dresses or skirts, wearing them high-waist or low-waist, pairing them with crop tops or chunky sweaters - there is no limit to what you can do!
One of my favorite looks right now is mixing skinny jeans with a bulky sweater, which shows off how wide leg pants can be dressed up if styled properly.
Another great look is pairing cropped skinny jeans with heels and oversized sweaters for an effortlessly chic daytime look. Just remember: It doesn't matter if you're mixing black denim with navy blue or bright pink because any shade of jean will make an outfit pop!
The right fit
The perfect fitting pair of jeans is hard to find. In order for denim pants to be the best look, they have to have just the right fit. You want them slim enough so that you can show off your style, but not so tight that they are uncomfortable. Make sure there is room in the seat and thighs. Go for a jean with some stretch in it and if possible, opt for a fabric like raw or selvedge. Raw will give you a more classic feel while selvedge will give you a more modern look that looks great with any shoe.
The right shoes
- Choose a heel height. Utilizing heels can elongate your legs and give the illusion of being taller, but the higher the heel, the narrower the silhouette will be.
- If you want to widen your leg line, go for a lower heeled shoe. If you want to make your legs look even longer and leaner (regardless of whether or not you're wearing heels), go for a pump with a block heel.
- Make sure your shoes match your outfit. Matching color with color is always more flattering, while contrast often creates a more interesting looks.
For example, if you are wearing a pair of black jeans and a colored top, consider opting for a pair of dark-toned heels instead of light-colored ones (which would make your legs look like they disappear into your shoes).
- Check out what other people are wearing. It doesn't matter if they're not in your style tribe—you can still learn a lot from how they accessorize and what types of shoes they select for certain outfits. This will help you create more interesting shoe-outfit combinations in your own wardrobe.
The right accessories
The number one way you can take a basic outfit from zero to hero is with a few, well-chosen accessories. Make your outfit that much more memorable by picking pieces that are unique and not already in every other person’s wardrobe. The thing I love most about accessories is how they bring personality and spice up a look without feeling too bulky or overwhelming.
Don't be afraid to go for something really bold like an embellished bag or an oversized statement necklace. In my opinion, the best pair of jeans deserves just as much attention as the top you're wearing them with! If you're going to invest in some new denim, invest in a great fitting and flattering style so it will last you through all of this season's trends.
The right top
Dressing up denim is one of the easiest ways to dress for a night out. This laid back look requires little tailoring but is easy and still has that just-rolled-out-of-bed appeal. Paired with nude or pink pumps, faux fur trimmed coat, and statement jewelry you’ll be sure to turn heads all night long. If you prefer a slouchier look try it with unbuttoned shirt and tucked in skinnies.
The right bottoms
Jean shorts, cropped jeans, and boyfriend jeans are the perfect bottoms for any outfit. The most important thing is to make sure your denim bottoms are fitted through the hips and thighs. Stay away from looser fit bottoms or anything that has excessive distressing! If you're going for a more conservative look, simple washes will do.
On the other hand, if you want something a little more experimental, go for high-waisted shorts with contrasting pockets or some lightly ripped skinnies.
Statement pieces can be anything, even denim!
There are so many jeans out there in the world and so many different fits, styles, washes, and fabrics. There are a lot of options for ways to look good in denim. If you want street style’s best denim looks then you need a basic jean with great shapes (low rise or high rise), the right amount of distress (preferably natural), and color fades that blend into one another beautifully.
Think outside the jeans!
Ever wondered how your favorite street style stars always manage to find the perfect pair of jeans? It's all about the different washes and styles! From pairing a white-washed bootcut with a neon crop top, adding contrast with a tapered flare in red or giving your outfit that jeans + dress vibe by wearing an A-line skirt over high rise jeans, there are plenty of denim looks out there for everyone.
